The Incongruous City

Mrs L sees and hears it on the streets of Manhattan

Tuesday, August 12th

I was in a taxi, stopped at 8th Avenue and 50th Street, when I saw a woman walking across the street flossing her teeth as she walked.  She was holding a long, white piece of dental floss and just happily going at it as she talked to her companion and made her way to the corner.  "OH my God.  Do you see that?" I said to the taxi driver.  He looked up and saw her and held up his hands.  ‘AW, don’t show me that, don’t show me that!"  He turned around and looked at me seriously.  "Once about five years ago I was on the train, and a man standing next to me took out a q-tip and started cleaning his ears.  I’ve never gone on the subway since."  We both shook our heads in disgust and the light changed.

Rosanne, Rosanne,

...see, and you thought chewing gum was bad, and then there was the woman with the body lotion at dinner. . .  I know and I hear you - people really DO think they’re invisible or something. How about this tho, I was at the gym once and saw a woman(no spring chicken either)prancing around wearing a pair of sheer black pantihose and a short T-shirt, an that’s it. I’m assuming that she thought they were tights or some sort of leotard fabric??

It’s part of the changing landscape, I suppose.  Nobody worries about offending anyone else anymore.  I’m in line for the register at CVS and the guy in front of me calls his wife and goes into vivid detail about the flaming rash he hopes his purchase will tame.  Ringing cell phones and crying infants come with the ticket price at the cinema.  Cars inflict the most wretched, (literally) pounding music when they pull up to you at a red light. Stop!  I don’t want to hear it anymore! And now we get to SEE people’s hygiene?

I’d consider relocating to another planet, but there’s still chocolate on this one…

Sadly enough, the good ol’ television (movies in particular) play a great part in American society and perception of what is acceptable and what is not. As much as I enjoy Jodie Foster, I was disappointed when I saw a fairly recent movie of her where she did just that, floss her teeth, in a nice, tight close-up shot. It wasn’t pretty and gave me a tainted view of her forever.

I floss my teeth on a regular basis (and perhaps this is taking it to the extreme) but my mate has never seen me do this. I consider it a part of my personal hygiene maintenance. Call me crazy.

Love your new website design, Roseanne. I do miss that very cool pic you used to have of yourself lying on a couch in the water (water looked so real). It was one of the coolest pics I’ve ever seen on a website. I enjoyed looking at it everytime. Guess I’m easily amused (chuckles).

Nikki and I do sincerely do hope you are recovering well from your surgery and look forward to seeing you again soon.

PS I’m re-reading “Bodies of Water” because it is so interesting.

Best of luck in everything you do, Roseanne.  Until next time…

Things I have seen on the NYC street. A man shaving his Verizon truck on Eastern Parkway on the way to the Interborough/Jackie Robinson. I have also seen a man brushing his teeth and spitting out the toothpaste from the inside of his car. But the hygiene technique that gets me is people who clip their fingernails in public places, including the subway. Maybe even my coworker who clips them at her desk behind me.

NY NY its a wonderful town….

You gotta admit…there’s nothing worse than sitting in traffic next to a guy with his index finger drilling away into his sinus cavities!
