The Incongruous CityMrs L sees and hears it on the streets of ManhattanTuesday, September 9 September 11th: I sang at the memorial service at the World Trade Center site on the fourth anniversary of the attacks, September 11, 2005. The request had come from the Mayor’s office, and even the choice of song was specified. I sang "Danny Boy", a somewhat difficult song in the best of circumstances, but actually physically painful in the midst of a sea of grieving survivor’s families on that warm day three years ago. I will never forget it, and I will never forget that day four years earlier, how I watched the towers burn from the middle of Greenwich Street. My initial reaction, which still holds: No one should have to experience this, ever. Anywhere. God bless the whole world, no exceptions. previous | next | back to main page |

I can’t imagine being able to sing at all at a memorial service, but I imagine years of professional life enable you to detach enough to get through it. I have family for whom “Danny Boy” would have been a punch in the gut - too visceral to hear, much less sing. And yet mourning is complicated. Let it be both raw and composed. Thanks.

Two indelible days: September 11th and September 12th. The thoughts of many fans and friends will be with you and your family on the 5th anniversary tomorrow.
